Dreams to Goals to Success!!!

It has been a very busy few weeks for me.  I have been working a lot of hours, preparing for my presentation and helping out my parents.  But I have still been working on my dreams and goals!!

I finally did my presentation yesterday at our public library, on the topic of travelling the world on a budget and with no credit cards.  I am very happy to report that it was a great success!!  I had such a great group of people there who were inquisitive and engaging, and while I had prepared 30 pages of notes, I ended up basically improvising most of the presentation.  It was such a fantastic afternoon and it gave me the confidence boost that I was hoping for to get out and do more public speaking.  So a dream went to a goal and became a success!!

I honestly believe that we all have it in us to do this.  A dream is just a dream if you don’t set dates to make it happen.  That’s what goals are for.  Have a dream, write down a date you want to accomplish it by, it becomes a goal!

My next dream is to publish an article, and I have a date that I want to accomplish that by.  So the next dream has been put in motion with my goal date.

What do you dream of doing?

So long Chile

A new year for goal setting

2018 is here, and I enjoyed it by napping, waking up to see the ball drop in Times Square, and then headed to bed right away!  I am not much of a party person so it was okay to have a quiet New Year’s Eve.  I enjoyed it with my family, something I haven’t done in a long time.

But now 2018 is here.  I had such an eventful 2017 that I am not really sure how I will top it, but I will most definitely be having an amazing year.  My positive attitude will keep flowing right through this new year and will make this an amazing year.

I was lucky enough to see China, Chile and then back to Canada last year, and I have every intention to travel somewhere this year for a holiday – Canada will be my home base now for a few years but that doesn’t mean I will just be staying here and working.  I am ready to explore a new country even if it is just for a week or two.  Perhaps I will even pick a country that doesn’t start with “C”!

One of my goals (NOT resolutions – a goal is much more attainable I believe) is to get an article or two published, while continuing to work on my book.  My goal is to improve my writing.  I have other goals too, but this is my big one for the year.  I know I can do it – I just need to make the time to write more.

What goals have you made?  Or do you make resolutions?  Do you make the same one every year?  And do you keep it?

A new year, a new start – there is no time like the present to get to it!!

For now though,  I am reminiscing about 2017 – here are a few of my favourite moments from this past year.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

What did you want to be when you grew up?  Did you accomplish that dream?  Or are you still waiting to grow up ??  I know some of us feel we have yet to grow up – me included some days!!

When I was a young girl, I wanted to be a teacher.  In high school, I aspired to be a lawyer.  I think I would have been a good lawyer if I had pursued that, but after working for lawyers for 30 years, I no longer care to ever pursue that long ago dream!!

Some of us have big dreams and some of us just want to have a career and make enough money to buy a house, have a family and retire one day.

As I have approached my grown up years (I would say that would be about 60 the rate I am going haha), I think I finally have an idea of what I want to be.  While I do love teaching overseas, and I hope to pursue it again in a couple of years, there is a desire to pursue writing full time.  The venue for my writing is still something I am deciding, but I know that if I pursue this and research it like I did with the teaching, I will be successful.  It’s not just research and patience that brings success, it is also attitude.  I have a positive and strong attitude and I know I can do it.

So I ask the question again – what do you want to be when you grow up?  Are you happy with what you ended up doing in your life?

Which path will you take?

Every day on my way home from teaching, I come to two paths. One is stone, easy to walk on but uneven. The other is grassy, an uneven surface but muddy.

A sudden storm came through the city today, lighting up the afternoon sky and rolling thunder, scaring me and the kids in class!  Luckily, when I left for home, the rain had stopped, leaving a freshness in the air but a wet walk.

When I came to the path, I pondered which to take. Do I take the stone path and avoid the mud but possibly slipping on the wet stone?  Or do I take the muddy path and get dirty, but avoid slipping?

As I made my way home, this thought kept creeping into my mind. Had I taken the safer path in my life, would it have been as exciting as my life is now?

There are times in our life that choosing the safe path is the best thing to do for ourselves.  But then there are other times that its okay to take the riskier path just to see what happens.

The question is ~ what if you decide to turn around and never take either path? What if you decide that you would rather go the long (and safe) way to your destination?

Life is what we make of it.  Choosing the path that is right for you is something only you can figure out. Be a risk taker sometimes ~ take that unknown path and see where it leads you.  The future is yours!!

So are you wondering which path I took??   I took the grass path ~ uneven surface with lots of mud.  I felt like a kid again, getting muddy, and enjoying the walk.  I always try to choose the path that will make me happiest!

Books Books Books!!

I believe that everyone has some sort of addiction. Maybe its a caffeine addiction. Maybe a sugar addiction, or even something stronger. My addiction is books ~ specifically notebooks.

China has very cheap office supplies!  And it is all good quality. My problem is the notebook.  All sizes.  But they have to be lined paper. My addiction is very specific.

You may be wondering ~ what is she doing with all these books?? I am glad you asked!!

Since I am a teacher, at least four of the notebooks are for lesson planning, with each grade having its own book.  There is one that is for my journaling. One is for my scribblings of the book I am trying to write about my travels.

That leaves about 10 to 12.  Each one has something in it. Lists. Names of students. Addresses. Random things I write.  I know one or two have different ideas for blogs. One also has information about places I want to travel to. There is no specific purpose for any of the others, other than to satisfy my addiction.

So why am I blogging about such a random topic?  To show that teaching and traveling the world is sometimes boring but in a good way. There are lazy days. Days I want to be introspective. Those are very good days to journal!

Living in foreign countries can sound glamorous but, in reality, it is not always that way. It is a way of life, a routine. I just happen to be living and working in China. And so with a routine comes mundane and boring days. And that’s why I have books. To fill them with my words. My visions. My nonsensical lists. And yes there are many nonsensical lists! Haha

It’s okay to have boring days. Creativeness can come from those days. New travel plans can be decided on. A whole world can open up to you, if you give boredom a chance.

So give it a try ~ plan a day of nothing, with just a notebook and a pen to keep you busy. You might be surprised at how fun a boring day can be!
