Tales of a grocery store clerk – final chapter

Today is the day. My last day. There are mixed emotions. I have only been here since September, but I have made some great friends and have worked with some fabulous people. It’s been an interesting experience as a cashier at a grocery store.

This was the first time for me to work in a grocery store. I had my apprehensions about this. Thoughts went through my mind – would the customers be patient with me? Would my co-workers get tired of me asking the same question over and over (and I did that and most were okay with it!)? How many times would I mess up someone’s bill? How do I void something? So many questions!!

Working in retail is always a challenge, but during a pandemic it’s been an extreme challenge. Rules to follow, distances to be kept apart, having to tell customers not to do certain things and to please wait while I clean. Not always was this a good exchange. However, for the most part, it’s been a great experience.

My heart has been touched by the many people who express their gratitude towards me, especially the older generation who I interacted with on a daily basis. They will be the ones I miss the most – their expressions of gratitude when I help them with their groceries, putting them in their reusable bags and then putting them in the buggy for them. Most of the time I was doing it because I wanted to help them – there were some times that I did it to speed up the line because the line up was long – but they didn’t know that and were always very gracious with their thank you’s. If it helps them have an easier time, then it makes my day!

I will miss the ladies I work with (and of course the young men too), but it’s the ladies I made the connection with here. We have had some lovely conversations between customers and it’s been great getting to know them. I will miss them.

But with all that being said – I am SO happy to be heading out to be with my kids and grandkids. I have wanted to be with all of them for a while and I cannot wait to get there and hug them all and hold them close to my heart.

Who knows – I may end up working back in the grocery business once I get myself settled. No matter what though – where I work and my adventures will always be detailed here for you to see – whether you like or not HAHAHA.

On to my next adventure…. so long!!
